excuse me if I sound a little frustrated, but I have to say that the auto-punch feature in this prgrm has to the least intuitive I've ever used. what gives? why doesn't it have the option to simply swipe an area with my locator bar (or whatever the heck it's called) and have it punch in from the L / R locator's like cubendo?dead simple..but i've been screwing around every which way with this friggin thing and the only way it's letting me setup an in/out point is manually entering in the fields in the selection area off the transport. again, i apologize but am i ever #$%#$% frustrated right now after spending over an hour screwing around just trying to get a normally in every other daw i've used punch in/out. and i did read the manual and searched "auto-punch" and it comes up with references to it but no detailed explanation of how the feature works in reaper.why on earth can't i just do it via the L/R locators? arrrrrg

What's bad about: Make a time selection then right-click record-button in transport and chose Record mode: time selection auto punch and hit record? Michael
because you've sounded a "little bit" frustrated and still don't seem to be satisfied with my suggestion and still are missing your beloved locators... Here they are! And: They are free and you may use them according to your needs :D Michael
ok 1 more try: ensure in options menu (at the top) - that link loop points to time selection is on. then just set loop with mouse and record when set in auto-punch mode. that what you want? if that option is off or you just like it off (i guess not) you can alt- r-click drag to make a time selection with mouse, which is new versions can be made to be just r-click drag in prefs. think you are attracting the banter as you are suggesting a feature that is clearly there, is not there! go and punch into loops with much joy
Yeah, I was going to say... who inputs the in and out markers manually? I had half-forgotten you COULD because I always use the mouse. Click in empty space, drag, done.
glad u sorted it. Tbf Michaels 1st suggestion was pretty much your answer. "make time selection" for most folks means using the mouse - so we weren't to know you had missed that little gem along the line from your description and had been manually entering it. maybe consider taking a walk before posting if your frustrated, and perhaps the responses will be more useful! p.s if on a laptop why not use one of those tiny usb mice? i love mine - as is optical you can use your leg or sofa as surface, beats trackpad anyday.
