greets, after reading many posts here on the athlon situation i have decided to build my newpc with a kt266a chipset and an xp cpu, but before i take the plunge i would like to know if anyonje has had problems with certain pieces of software not being to function properly with the digi drivers.. in particular; has anyone tried using fruityloops with the digi drivers? i had my 001 in my current pc and fruityloops was full of clicks and pops, and would only run at all at an extremely particular buffer length...i have a pIII 733 but i think my motherboard is a piece of crap (gigabyte GA-6VXE7) - the whole system was extremely unstable and i had to take the card out and put in my mac (which is a slow G3 without the power i need). has anyone had issues with non digi software running through the digi drivers? also, if i were to use a HD with a slow read speed as my system disk how much performance loss am i looking at? thanks-

RE: 001 pc software compatability

Put simply the Digi001 on a PC sux for any other software than Protools LE. There are no ASIO drivers for PC for the digi001 so that rules out Most if not all of the other music softwares. Windows is left to make an emulated soundcard out of channel 1/2 on the 001 and the performance is pathetic. If you want to run alternative software on a digi001, buy a mac. Quite why digidesign havent sorted out asio support for pc, when it is available for mac is a mystery to me.

quote:
Originally posted by Reclined: there is nothing a PC can do a mac cant

That is not true now. I can have ridiculous amount of plugins with my Athlon XP1800+(220 to be exact) where the Fastest MAC can do only half right now. If this changes next week with MacWorld Expo then I will buy a MAC whenever I have enough money (before the summer i hope). As i said before, my PC is all i need as far as the power goes right now. The rest is upto my talent. So, even if the PCs get a lot more faster next year, with MAC that has enough power, I should be able to use any Soft Synth, Plugin, Logic etc... I will choose freedom then. However, a friend of mine has a G4 867mhz and i have more freedom than he does now. He has very limited power compared to mine. He paid 3grand for his machine. I have to admit that i loved his super drive though. Also OSX looks and behaves great. It is very artistic and fun to use. We will see the developments next week.

athlon performance aside, do any of you use non digidesign software on the pc? if so what are the best options for sound quality...? nobody seems to know... in my pIII i set fruityloops to a certain buffer setting which had it playing my tracks ALMOST perfectly, just with the odd pop and click...the sound quality verse my creative card was stunning. protools didn't work properly though, because of the mobo thing.
