Volvo 440Si-Won't Start!

Like most newbies my first posting is a plea for help, probably on our fifth 440 and i didn't realise this site existed until this morning! My car is a 440si, N reg with 55000 miles, went out to it this morning and plipped it with the remote which has never given us a problem and the car just will not fire, turns over plenty quick enough but just won't go--i can't afford professional help because i'm recently unemployed so do any of you kind people know where i can start looking, i've tried my second fob and that works fine too!

just in case this is happening to anybody else--as a last resort i just disconnected the battery for a minute-connected it back up then the car started-didn't even need to mess with the remote fob-nice when it's an easy fix isn't it!
