I returned briefly to make a simple feature request about something that drives me batty. *Please* provide a midi channel setting in Reaper. Not (as present) a setting of which channel to look for coming in, but a channel setting to change anything coming in to. If set to channel 7 then no matter what channel I play into the midi input port it gets recorded and echoed as channel 7. Nobody has made it afaik so I thought I'd drop in to make it. Back to lurking... peace... Thanks. P.S. Yes, I know about the JS midi plugs and all of that. Instead of inserting a plug this should be handled at the track level in native code.
A good way to do it is via a routing matrix (16x16)... per track. This takes care of both midi channel filtering and re-routing... both very useful functionalities. It could be in the IO window, or a plugin (ReaMIDIRoute?) but please not JS (because of the UI limitations).

Maybe I'm missing something but this should be kept simple - a selection somewhere to set the MIDI output channel -- perhaps on the right_click Track menu -- perhaps on the Monitor window
Currently it seems backwards. The thing you need to do much more often (define the incoming stream channel # from the daw) requires a plugin every time you do it on every track, and the thing you rarely ever need to do (filter/listen to a single channel from a multi-channel stream coming in) is built in the UI as default behavior. Seems it should be the other way around given how often people generally do those things.
You're right, I didn't think far enough. What we have right now is a "filter single channel out of multichannel stream" on both, the input menue as well as the plugin, but no "channel remap" anywhere (well, there are JS plugs doing it, but not without handicap). I could do with a channel remap either on the menue or in the plug. Both has advantages. The track's menue because no inserting of a plug is needed, the plugin because we can have a readout on the track and control from hardware. Anyway it's done, it is needed. I tried to do it with JS MIDI_Tool II, but the UI-knob doesn't seem to translate properly to the channel parameter. They don't switch values in sync and I can't reach the lowest value via the UI-knob. So no MIDI learn for me for this parameter. (I am one of those poor souls without MIDI Channel switch on the MIDI keyboard, it's hidden deeeep in the SY85 menues...) As I can live without that as long as Logic 5 continues to run happily on my OS, I ++1 your initial request to have it on the track's menue.
For people playing with MIDI routing stuff: you might be interested in the simple MIDI channel remapper/filer and limiter JS plugs I added recently here: (I haven't checked it out with automation yet; feedback/suggestions always welcome). Would love to see such stuff included natively instead of JS, of course.
