5.0.2 Freeze (but it's not a playback problem!)

Hi all, I encoded a 90 min. movie with VirtualDub, 5.0.2 & TemporalSmother(3). When I play it back from the start the video freezes at 23 seconds (no audio in that avi) although MediaPlayer's time counter stil runs. Then my computer "slowly" freezes. i.e. windows stop responding in a random fashion until the whole explorer.exe task goes bananas and finally Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings nothing up and a cold reboot is my final option. Funfact: why is this *NOT* a playback problem? Well, the whole point of all that was to end up w/ an ogm. When I use OggMux to mux the whole shebang... OggMux freezes at 23 seconds!!! Along with the rest of my computer as time goes by in the fashion described above! How's that for a braintwister!? :D Any help appreciated (although my hopes are not very high!) :scared:

you probably have some corrupt frames there... load your problematic AVI into virtualdub, then go to 19 seconds or so, then just slowly scroll down to where the error occurs.. (scroll with the right arrow) pay attention to the status bar of virtualdub, it will inform you of any corrupt or bad frames. also, is "smooth playback" enabled in your codec settings? if it is, disable it! start menu, divX--->DivX or whatever--->DivX Decoder options good luck!

I just did, and guess what? My computer froze! I was clicking though frames and then... boom! Freeze. Right at 23.45~ seconds. I guess my only option is to reencode the thing. But that spurs the questions: what causes frames to be corrupted? And what kind of "frame corruption" could possibly make your computer freeze? Whatever, one more overnight encode won't kill me, eh? :p

I have a similar problem, only I have it at semi-random places in playback, in any player I try. I'm watching a movie encoded in divx5 and lame mp3, and that's all I'm doing and boom, freezes my computer. I put it in virtualdub and fast preview scan and no problems (but this uses a different decoding profile). Sometimes if I put quality to min, it seems to help but I still have problems. It's so I can't get through an hour of a video without rebooting my computer. Using directx7, ATI all in wonder rage 128, win 98SE

This thing happened to me once and I actually was having some bad clusters on hdd right on that spot. If you did't already deleted the avi try to copy it somewhere else to find out if this is the problem. edit: I've seen that the original post is dated August. :) Anyway this maybe will help somebody else someday. Maybe...

midiguy: thanks for the suggestion to disable 'smooth playback' ! That solved the problem for me. On my new computer i eagerly enabled all possible features including that one. I've seen about 100 DivX5 movies and I've only had this problem with two anime movies that i encoded myself: Akira @2min and Metropolis @74min. Luckily for me it wasn't a hdd-bad-cluster problem or an encoding problem. I use: p4-2400 :), 512 DDR, asus p4b533-e with RAID, 80 GB Western Digital 7200 rpm 8MB udma100, 120 GB maxtor 7200 rpm 2MB udma133, geforce4 mx440, NTFS, winXPpro-sp1 (incl directx8), gordian knot, virtualDUB 1.4.13, win media player 6.4 (!), lame, dialup connection @56k :(

RE: 5.0.2 Freeze (but it's not a playback problem!)

Hi all, Here is another divx freezing problem Similar to Navellint's and prom3theus's. The difference is that none of the video plays but the Audio is fine. However if I play An AVI with no audio it works fine. I use Zoomplayer 2.9b2, Ogg for audio, An Amd atholon, ATi Raedon 64ddr, Windows 2000 with service pack3. This has happened to all my Ogm files on hdd and discs new and old. Strangely in media player there is no audio and all the frames in the file become one big stack of images as you seek within the movie but refuse to play as one. This is the third time it has occured only work around so far was to format my windows drive and reinstall everything and that is very frustrating. I don't know if it's a program, a codec, or something stupid. Any Help would be useful. Here is the graph from graphedit

@midiguy Thanks for your idea about disabling 'smooth playback'! This is a HUGE bug, isn't it? I tried everything, re-encoded the movie, parsed the logs, checked the video stream with two different versions of virtual dub... and then I came here to post about it. Fortunately, it was not necessary. Divx5.02 is not that perfect IMHO... not to mention spyware distribution... maybe I should just go for Xvid. Too bad GKnot doesn't support it directly (yet). I hope that will change for the next version! Thanks again, you've helped me a lot!
