Re: What Are Some Of The Symptoms Of Bad Ram?

RAM is generally bad from day one. They usually don't 'go bad' one day. General protection faults, some blue screens-featuring memory dumps, freezing/lock ups are the usual symptoms of bad RAM. Reboots can happen, but in my experience are rare. Trying RAM from another machine is an easy way to determine if RAM is the culprit. Most likely it's the O.S., drivers (especially video, sound card, & networking), or at the very extreme a bad motherboard or memory bus slot. Those are very, very rare though. Did the machine receive new RAM lately and then started these random reboots? Has this machine always done this? In other words, what's changed?

RE: Re: What Are Some Of The Symptoms Of Bad Ram?

Just some things to look for ... BSODs - you know Video anomolies - wierd redraws or stuck screens Locked up PC - complete with the loss of cursor Bios problems - drives not detected properly, etc. I have had all these problems in the past that were fixed by new RAM. I have had the reboot problem on PCs with an 001 and also an AM3 card. Both times the problem was fixed (or at least hasnt happened again, yet) by removing the Network Card (3COM 509C both times). On the first AM3 PC it would reboot while downloading and listening to music. Even though the music was coming out of another sound card (Diamond Monster Sound MX300) This was very predictable. Once the NIC was gone, no more reboots. Oddly enough though I dont think it ever rebooted while running ProTools LE (5.0 at the time)??? Go figure. Hope this helps the 'slide

RE: Re: What Are Some Of The Symptoms Of Bad Ram?

I found out that i had bad ram when trying to install winXP. It would give me all kind of weird errors.... I the also realized that is was like that before. My PC couldnt handle large files very well. It crashed/froze 2 out of 3 times i was trying to do something with big files. This includes starting ptle (it checks the memory...), copying files (including consolidating within ptle, and do a save session as), burning cd's, etc...

My ram went bad twice and what id did to me was lose my registry over and over, reverting to previous versions until it had none left. And then BSOD.

my bad ram symptoms often include -nausea -slight headache -hot flashes and heart palpitations -looking through old Commodore 64 ads from the 80's -questioning the theme and stage set of The Price is Right, which hasen't changed in 20 years. -the desire to own nothing more than a guitar, a mandolin and a 4-track recorder

With this reboot mystery I'm trying to narrow things down. I'm concerend with the Ram right now. How do ram problems materialize in the computer? in other words IF ram is behind the reboots what other things might be happening (in my computer) that I should be noticing? thanks
