So maybe I'm not easily finding books on mixing and eq because there aren't any? Crap! :) Thanks! Your advice makes sense. I'll give it a shot.

I really like by Roey Izhaki. It has in depth info about how we percieve sound, various processors, mixes and audio examples on CD. But it won't train your ears for you ;)

This has helped me out quite a bit: Not a book, but a great reference for when you need something quick!

If you you need full tracks of mixes of songs to help along the way there are some pretty cheap ways to get all the tracks to hear the eq changes. Hopefully you can improve your ears Rock and Punk Type Mixes ($5/Song with pretty good content) Country Mixes (Used copy around $15 with pretty good content) Recording Review has a couple decent mixes you can download for free

For a really interesting read and some inspiration I'd highly recommend "Behind the Glass" by Howard Massey. In addition to that, I recently bought the "ReaMix: Breaking the Barriers with REAPER" by Geoffrey Francis. I haven't read much of it yet but it sounds like the kind of book you would find useful.

+1 for ReaMix. It presents the concepts quite well and the examples and discussion are Reaper-oriented, so it really ties things together nicely. Another book I own and recommend is Mixing & Mastering by Bill Gibson. It's book 6 of a 6-part series, but it stands on its own pretty nicely.

It's been a while since I went through ReaMix so I can't comment on how much EQ'ing help it has I can vouch that it is a steal especially for people using Reaper because of the amazing examples on everything so... +1 for ReaMix

Books aside, they're great, the best thing you can do to get up to speed is listen to high quality commerical music through your monitors... often. No joke. I spend so much time editing and doing rough mixes in my den I have to often reaquaint myself with the studio. Before you learn "what" to do with EQ/FX you have to be able to hear the "when" and that only comes with time.
