To translate for our guitarist friends, a really nice full set of double bass strings can cost more than your amp and a single string can take a long time to set up properly and settle in alongside the others. You don't tend to carry spares in the gig bag. As to adversity making a man of you, yup. Some of the jangly puke-scented glorified Welsh dressers I've had to play... I can actually do an emergency piano tuning, but with some of the wrecks I've encountered I've preferred to make do rather than risk it. Oh, and everyone - some older pianos can't even be made to reach concert pitch. So when the pianist asks you to tune to their note, please don't take it personally. And if the electronic clip-on tuner disagrees, tough. Use the analogue clip-on devices attached to the sides of your head. But apologies. We seem to have wandered off topic.
