I hated it that the car only had one rear foglight so when I was in the Volvo dealers getting my car looked at for something else I got them to fit one - they did it for free!

the manufacturers purposely only fit one rear foglight, and all the latest models/makes have one rear foglight positioned in the middle of the car, this is mandatory under eu legislation so that the rear foglights are easily recognised as such, and not confused with brake lights. paul
aye, If I run into the back of you now because I couldn't tell you had braked due to doubling up on the rear fog lights, I could claim off you, and as you've modified the vehicle from standard your insurance won't pay out. worse case scenario - but it happens. vipes
'but it happens' - rubbish. If you can't stop in the distance you see to be clear then you are at fault whether or not it is foggy. Besides if the person in front was braking wouldn't there be three lights on ?
it does happen actually - I could provide evidence but can't really name and shame. If you've modified your vehicle and not delared it - then tough. some insurers will pick up on it - some don't care. Yes there will be a third light but that's irrelevant. Only one fog light is fitted for a reason, and by connecting up the second your asking for trouble. Vipes
Sorry, I just do not believe that anyone has been prosecuted, been sued or had their insurance invalidated for adding a legally placed second fog lamp. Regarding whether one lamp is safer than two there are good arguments on both sides, this paper gives the history and references to studies of both:
