send-return external Reverb latency??

Hi, Is still don't have a real clue how latency works... I have my reverb unit connect to the S/PDIF in/out on my 001. From PTLE 5.3.1 i send some signal from my tracks to S/PDIF out. I've got an aux channel with inout S/PDIF in, so the 'wet' signal is mixed together with the original. When i have 128 samples delay i here some ticks when i playback, so i have to go to 256 samples. So there is some delay when i playback? Can i do something about that? When i bounce is the latency still there? Jeroen

nothing you can do about that except compensate for it. live with it and after you print it, nudge it back by your buffer size X 2 +51. so if your buffer is 256, nudge the printed verb left by 563 samples. see this for more detail:

Most reverbs have a "pre-delay" anyhow. If it seems too much, just compensate for the latency by shortening the pre-delay on the reverb unit.

da BaSsTaRd!: According to the article, PTLE already compensates for the buffer delay (no matter what size the buffer), so the track should only be nudged 51 samples, right? And that is if the s/pdif in/outs have the same amount of delay as the analog in/outs (as in the article).

no - 51 plus twice your buffer setting...

I will test tonight how much the S/PDIF delay is... also when i record the reverb output to an audio track, i have only to nuch it back the amout of delay of the S/PDIF and not 2x the Buffer Size..isn't it? Jeroen

OK This is valid for digitally connected reverbs, but let's say I want to hook up a digital reverb using the analog I/O on both the 001 and the reverb unit, how do you compensate for the latency? adjusting the predelay on the reverb again? Thanx L.G.

RE: send-return external Reverb latency??

THis is how I run my verbs, Gerax, and there is a whole lot of latency going on because of stacked latency. You have the Digi buffer latency (X2), plus the Digi converter latency (51 samples - thanks Bri), PLUS whatever latencies your signal processor has from input to output. So, for my TC m-one set up to return via Analog 7&8 with buffer setting of 128, I get total latency of 128+128+51+35. What sucks so badly is the fact that some reverbs preserve a lot of the transients within the early reflections in the verb algorithms (TC), and no matter what I do, I can't get a reasonably accurate picture of what the verb is trying to do because the latency comes across as a slap. Adjusting the predelay will not help you if you don't want any predelay...I absolutely hate this. I mean yeah, I CAN print and nudge, but that sucks beacuse if you aren't happy after you nudge, you have to tweak and print again. I don't like to guess. Plus, I don't want to commit to my verbs until Im sure that the mix is finished. How can I know that the mix is finished unless I print my verbs? Its a connundrum. Boy I wish Digi would do something to compensate for these bus latencies (and plugin latencies while they're at it). Destructive nudging can be very difficult to undo if you forget to notate it.

Matt I totally understand your point. My sytuation is that I definitely want to run hardware reverbs and processors (no matter how good plug-ins can sound I love Lexicon's and Eventide's sound), but you only have a stereo SPdif pair on the 001 and once you have hooked up something like the Eclipse to the ADAT I/O the digital I/O capability of the 001 is already maxed out; this unless somebody makes an ADAT merger that allows one to plug up to 4 digital processors equipped with ADAT capability, and able to choose the pair to send the signal over. Any ideas about this? In the meantime I'll stick to those two HW reverbs and do the rest with plugins, and a healty dose of DSP... L.G.
