Starter motor whine

MessageAuthor

Hi After 1 (cold and wet) week idle, started my 53 plate S60 SE2.0T and a high pitched whine continued after engine caught. Turned off and whine starts again on first ignition key position getting higher pitched as engine fires on 2nd position. Is this starter motor solenoid sticking or something? If so, what can I do about it? MoT due Friday! Thanks Stewart

RE: Starter motor whine

could be solenoid sticking, try using a metal bar or similar to give the starter a sharp crack, see if it will release.

yep thanks - I decided not to drive it - happened on Friday just as we were set to go away for the weekend - took my wife's car instead.

RE: Starter motor whine

On further investigation (in daylight this time) it turns out not to be the starter motor making the whining noise but the motor for the driver side headlamp wiper. I've disconnected it for now but is there an easy way to repair/replace it? I've seen some other posts about this problem which seems to be a known issue. What do others do?
