RE: Reaper cant take 40 tracks of playback ... Help!
Double-check (in Device Manager) that your controllers/drives are using DMA and not PIO. If Windows detects enough random errors, it permanently kicks the drives down to PIO mode, which just sucks the performance right out. Scott

When you use the performance meter ,how much is just you computer consuming? Waht other resources are being used in the backround. Any virus software ,spyware, etc on,,,,,internet on ,wireless, Skin it back to just Reaper and your computer as much as possible.
RE: Reaper cant take 40 tracks of playback ... Help!
If it were a throughput issue with the drives I think it would stutter etc not just stop. Any other projects having issues? Have you turned off system sounds in Windows? Do the system sounds use the audio card reaper is using? If the computer is trying to reclaim the audio for its purposes it will reset sample rates/ bit rates etc for its own needs and cause all kinds of problems.

RE: Reaper cant take 40 tracks of playback ... Help!
As a test, try converting all the audio files to 24-bit files (REAPER will work with them as 64-bit internally anyways), and see what happens. Audio recording hardware is limited to 24-bit accuracy anyways, and the extra bits are not neccessary and can actually choke a system. I used to record mine as 64-bit files and had the same issues that you're reporting, but according to Justin (lead developer of REAPER), there's no need to record at anything higher than 24-bit, as REAPER utilizes them as 64-bit floats regardless. This fixed the issue for me on this one project that would choke after about 50 some-odd tracks, however, once I upgraded my HDs and got the quad-core, I have no problems with anything, even when saved at at 64-bit. Have you run the DPC Latency Checker? -mr moon

One of my standard DAW tests is to play 35 stereo 24bit/44.1k tracks (more than I >ever< use) with cpu meter hitting 15%. RE: Reaper cant take 40 tracks of playback ... Help!
I've run the DPC Latency Checker (it says my computer should be able to handle audio) ... I don't have internet... no antivirus either (could a virus cause this?) .... Performance meter inside reaper shows 0-4% cpu , and performance meter in task bar shows 0-3 % (when reaper is stopped) I converted the files to 24 bit, and it didn't stop for a while (and then it did), the CPU usage was around 36% (is that normal). How many tracks (wave files) should my system be able to play (check the specs on my first post).
RE: Reaper cant take 40 tracks of playback ... Help!
Maybe it's the processor, but the question is... how many tracks (wave files) should my system be able to play at the same time (at 32 bit/44.1 Khz, and 24bit/44.1 Khz)
