740 Rear Brake Squeal

Hi all, What a great place this is for a newbie like me. I have just renewed the front & rear disks & pads on my early 88 (E) 740GL Automatic. How do I stop the terrible squeal coming from the back brakes? I bought after market pads & disks but bought genuine Volvo Anti Squeal Shims. I used the paste as well but nothing I have done stops the squeal. The wife is threatening to boycott the car, now some of you may think "lucky devil" but she does come in handy when I have had a few. Any Advice? Thanks Martin

Volvo brakes are notorious for squeal. I hear them all the time. As you have bought the aftermarket pads, you'll probably be stuck with some type of squeal for a while, then again when they start needing to be replaced. My rears always squeal in reverse.

The only time i ever had squeal from the rear discs and pads was the first time i ever changed brake pads on the back. Since then i learnt that any Pattern pad will work fine without squeal as long as you make sure it can move freely. When you've pushed the pistons back in the caliper, Very carefully with a large file clean off the rust in the caliper where the pads will sit. then try and install the pads, if the pads are still a tight fit, take said file and file the contact edges down, i/e remove the paint from the pad. When the pad can move freely, then use copper ease on the contact parts making sure not to get any on the friction material and voila no squealing rear discs. Thats my 2pence anyway

Thanks all, I went out today & bought the OEM Pads & low & behold they came WITH Anti Squeal Shims. Tomorrow will be the test when I fit them. Thanks again. Martin

Well, it's day 2 of the new OEM pads AND!! "Silence Is Golden". Thats my lesson learnt. Cheers
